Register of Deeds 

Marriage Information

The premarital physical is no longer required.

Both bride & groom must present identification.

If you are age 14-15:

  • You must present a certified copy of a court order issued by a district court judge authorizing the marriage.

If you are age 16-17:

  • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds Office.

  • Both parties must present a certified birth certificate.

  • Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver’s license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.

  • A parent or legal guardian must be present and present legal documentation to prove they are the parent or legal guardian. You may be required to produce a certified copy of court orders.

  • You must bring a Social Security card or something valid with your number on it or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security number.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 20:

  • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds Office.

  • Both parties must present a certified birth certificate

  • Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver’s license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.

  • You must bring a Social Security card or something valid with your number on it or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security number.

If you are 21 years of age or over:

  • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds Office.

  • Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver’s license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.

  • You must bring a Social Security card or something valid with your number on it or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security number.

If you are divorced:

If the divorce was finalized within 1 year of applying for a marriage license, the party must present a copy of the divorce decree signed by the judge. There is no waiting period between the divorce and applying for the marriage license.

The license is good immediately upon issuance and is valid for 60 days. You can get your license in any county in the state of North Carolina and get married anywhere in the state of North Carolina, but it is very important to return the marriage license to the issuing county within 10 days after the marriage ceremony.

The fee for the marriage license is $60.00. We accept cash, checks, or money orders, made payable to the Dare County Register of Deeds.

The Register of Deeds Office is open from 8:30AM until 5:00PM but we ask that marriage applicants be in the office no later than 4:30PM, if possible. Our address is: Dare County Justice Center, 962 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo, North Carolina 27954.

If you plan to be married by a Magistrate, please contact them at 252-475-9228 for information regarding the office hours and other information regarding the ceremony and fees.

If you need a certified copy of your marriage license, you may acquire it at our office in person or you may request it by mail at: P.O. Box 70, Manteo, North Carolina 27954.
The fee is $10.00. A self-addressed stamped envelope is appreciated.

To speed up the application processing time, you may print out the following application and bring the completed form with you to the Register of Deeds Office.
